Game Brief Idea Generation

Making a group project game for kids age 3-4 isn't a piece cake especially with the restrictions we had, here they are:

Theme: Waves

Restrictions:

1. UI Focus
2. Limited Colour Palette
3. Combo System

Forbidden Mechanics:
1. Leaderboards
2. Inventory System
3. Currency
4. Timer
5. Health System
6. Ketchup

Piñata Bashing Game

Now with the ruleset being followed written down, I can tell you about the first idea my group had.

For the first idea, they envisioned a piñata bashing game. A rather basic concept, which I don't believe requires extensive plotting out.
Tapping or clicking on the piñata on screen to smash it up to unlock the sweets inside.

Each wave of piñata broken consecutively would accrue combo points . Apart from this my group mate didn't have any further ideas for this concept.

Personally I thought this idea had promise, it met the two of the significant criteria I wanted any concept to meet these are: Simple and Intuitive .

Only problem I had with it was the potentially violent nature of the game, it might be bit too much for kids so young and we might have trouble with pitching to the parents.

Crab Puzzle Game

A puzzle game featuring an adorable crab was my vision and I still thoroughly believe my idea was the best possible choice.

Unfortunately, my idea was not even listened to. One of my groupmates shot it down immediately  using expletives exclaimed "kids ******* can't do puzzle games"

After this I realised the rest of our idea generation chat was going to miserable.

The concept I had however, was simplistic. Crab wants a shell and by looking at the pattern as well as shape, pick the one matching what the crab is asking for. This can be seen in the concept art I made to the left.

Once the correct shell is selected the crab will be happy. Now for the combo system, every time the crab is given the right shell consecutively he starts dancing more and more.

Insecta

Insecta my other groupmate's idea. I am going to preface my explanation of the idea by saying I hate and I expressed many problems with but I was ignored. (The same person who shot down my idea)

I don't know what their thinking for the game was since they didn't bother to walk us through it much. All we were told is they wanted to a bug tower defence.

They decided this is what we were going to do and didn't even consider our perspectives. My biggest gripe is the concept doesn't work well with the restrictions. The number one flaw, is tower defence games are too complex for a 3-4 year old to be able to enjoy.

Restrictions like no health system, no timer, no currency all fundamental features of a typical tower defence. Having this idea sadly locked in I now believe this project is doomed to fail.
